Uthman ibn Affan (c. 576–656 CE) was the third Caliph of the Islamic community (r. 644–656 CE), succeeding Abu Bakr and Umar ibn al-Khattab. A close companion of Prophet Muhammad, he belonged to the influential Umayyad clan of the Quraysh tribe. Uthman is perhaps best known for commissioning the compilation and standardization of the Quran into a single text, a monumental achievement that has had lasting impact on Islamic scholarship and practice.
